JONATHAN ISRAEL GRIMES "JON"

Jonathan Israel Grimes “Jon” age 45, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, unexpectedly at James H Quillen VA Medical Center.

Jon was born in Norton, Virginia, the son of George Ricky Grimes and Robin Collier Legg. He was one of two children.

Jon was an active young man in his youth Running Cross Country and playing in the Band for Powell Valley High and Lee County Generals. Jon graduated from Powell Valley High School class of 1996. After graduation he joined the United States Army where he served his country honorably. He also served as a military contractor. His time in the military he served Kuwait, Quatar, Baghdad, Bolgrim Afghanistan, and South Korea. Once he returned to the stateside, he continued his education accumulating 241 college credits. Jon was employed by Lee County Public Schools and Mountain Empire Community college as a teacher. He enjoyed his farm life and being outdoors, he loved his family deeply and will be sorely missed by everyone.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Annie Grimes

Left to cherish his memory are children: Alexis Jessee & husband Austin, Derrick Grimes, Preston Grimes, Dominick Grimes, Madi Jo Grimes, Olivia Grimes, and Kadence Grimes, his fiancé’ Sarah Grace Jones, grandchildren, Asher and Archer Jessee, siblings; Sabrina Grimes, Sheri Gosling & husband Paul, Jessica Woodruff and husband Patrick & Nikki Legg, his father Rick Grimes, grandmother Polly Collier, aunts, Toni Herron and husband Allen, uncles, Darrell Collier and wife Pam, nephews, Parker Pitman, Skylar Pitman & wife Kyle, Joshua Carroll & fiancé’ Taylor Sturgill, Luke Stidham and wife Abbie, Kaleb Mink, nieces, Chelsey Herron, Annalyse Grimes, Marissa Gosling, Azreal Woodruff, Amaris Bowmen, other close relatives and friends too numerous to count.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, for the visitation from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Holding Funeral Home (17. E. 3rd. St. N.) in Big Stone Gap.

The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home’s chapel. The National Army honor guard team and the Local V.F. W. and D. A. V. will conduct full military honors.
