MARVIN WAYNE SHORTT
Marvin Wayne Shortt, age 78, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Brookdale Assisted Living after his battle with Lewy Body dementia. Marvin was born on November 30, 1945, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
Marvin was a proud graduate of Powell Valley High School where he continued to remain a vital part of the school's alumni, even helping to arrange much of the school's history at the Lonesome Pine School and Heritage Center. After his time in the Army, Marvin began working at Eastman Chemical. He retired from there in 1997. A loving and faithful Christian, he was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he enjoyed being a member of the choir and volunteering. One of Marvin's greatest joys was his work with the Boy Scouts of America. Marvin was a recipient of the Pioneer Award and Silver Beaver Award and served in multiple capacities during his 55 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, George and Debbie Bowen Shortt, and sister Clara Mae Sanders.
He is survived in death by his daughter, Karen Nelson and husband Travis; grandchildren Carriella Starnes, Kalee Hall, and Kendall Hall; brother Charles and wife Mary Shortt; brother Joe Shortt; brother Carl Shortt; sister Faye Rutherford; sister Phyllis Upchurch; Rebecca Mayo; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Temple Baptist Church in Kingsport. Funeral to follow with Pastor Scott Young officiating. A military honors graveside service will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 3/265. Serving as pallbearers will be Travis Nelson and Rodney Shortt. The Camp Davy Crocket Wednesday Crew will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Marvin's memory to Sequoyah Council for Camp Davy Crockett, 129 Boone Ridge Drive, Johnson City, TN 37615.
