L&N No. 208 was one of the regulars during the last decade of passenger service on the Cumberland Valley Division. Train No. 12 has just departed from the 1926-era brick passenger station at Appalachia, Va. after its 11:45 AM stop on a summer day in 1948. Kilbourne Avenue crossed both the L&N and Southern’s connecting track to the Pounding Mill Branch to Andover, plus a crossover. The L&N freight station is in the background. The station was once listed as “Union Station” in the Official Guide, as the Interstate’s modest passenger service and Southern’s trains to and from Bristol also called here. Those trains were discontinued in 1928 and 1939 respectively. (H. Reid Photo)
