new businesses

The old Fuller’s building in Appalachia has a new owner and a new face lift to the building. Looks very good.

A new eatery will be opening this summer. This is a big plus for the people of Appalachia since it has been a long time since a restaurant was in the town. Hopefully more businesses and people will relocate in our town so once again it will be a prosperous business venture.

HOUSE LOST IN FIRE

I ask everyone to please remember our childhood friend Larry Reed and his wife and mother-in-law in your prayers. Larry’s house caught on fire in the night and they escaped with only the clothes on their backs. A total loss of everything. We can’t imagine how much they have lost. He is currently staying with his son and his family in Big Stone Gap.

PENTECOST SUNDAY

This Sunday, May 23 is Pentecost Sunday. All church services recognize this day on the calendar to observe this day when the Holy spirit came into the upper room in Jerusalem and believers were baptized in the Holy Spirit. This is in St. John chapter 14:16 & 26. This is the promise that Jesus made to his disciples that He would not leave the comfortless but He would send the Holy Spirit to them.

FLOWERS IN BLOOM

May is the month of the year the Iris flower blooms and they are beautiful this year. They always remind me of a big orchid. We thought if we received an orchid for our prom it was a special occasion to wear on our evening gown. Time sure has changed now there isn’t enough material to pin a flower on the gowns. They usually carry a bouquet now in their arms.

BIRTHDAYS

May 31 Billy Ray Parsons will be 85 years old. His nieces Vonda and Audricha wishes him a happy birthday.

Happy birthday Mike Ben Ford on you 77th year. May 22 is the day he will celebrate. Mike has touched so many people’s life in the past 50 plus years in his medical profession. He always treated everyone like a friend and took time with them. You waited but he was worth the wait. Now all his friends have an opportunity to send Mike a birthday card to let him know how much they appreciate him. Happy birthday old friend.

RIVER VIEW CEMETERY

Please don’t forget to send your donations for the up keep at River View Cemetery in East Stone Gap. Randal Hicks, P.O. Box 162, East Stone Gap, VA 24246.

This cemetery is in need of your support to maintain the work of looking good during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Not all of us can go out and mow our family lots. So send your donation to Randal. Memorial Day is a time of the year when the visitation to the cemetery is more prominent with visitors.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

I was looking at family picture albums from our younger years and it got me to thinking about how happy and content we were with what our living conditions were back over 60 years ago.

We didn’t go to town to shop because that was not the thing children did, just parents. Actually when I think about it we had home delivery and didn’t realize it. Harold Phillips drove the truck from Clinch Haven Farm and delivered milk (yes chocolate milk) and orange drink plus orange juice. Fuller Brush salesman came door to door selling all kinds of brushes to work with and brooms also. jewel and coffee man sold dishes actually I have three bowls from our mother’s collection of dishes. He had other items beside coffee to sell. Stanley parties were held and the ladies in the camp attended and booked parties at their home and sold products for premium gifts. I have a wall mirror from booking a Stanley party. Encyclopedia Britannica salesman from Cincinnati, Ohio knocked door to door and my mom was convinced the set of encyclopedias was the thing we needed for our schooling problems. Bessie Wilder walked and sold Avon products and she delivered them back to the customer. Also people’s mail. We could ride a taxi cab for 50 cents for a trip from Inman to Appalachia. We knew all the drivers. In the summer when the garden veggies were ready Mr. Shuler drove his truck and sold directly to the people who needed veggies.

Now you can see why we didn’t need to go shopping.

The Spiegel catalogue and Finger Hut was our source for beautiful clothes, also J.C. Penny and Sears. We were pleased to get our clothes in the mail. The Christmas catalogue was a treat for everyone of all ages. We didn’t ask for anything but was pleased with what we got.

Ordering by mail has always been a way to receive what you are in need of. Now it is Amazon! I do not do ordering but my family does it pretty regularly. It is hard to adjust to the “now” for having your needs met, but it is progress I guess.
