Appalachia Lions Club

The Appalachia Lions Club voted at their Nov. 12 meeting to change the time of their bi-monthly stated meetings to 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. until further notice.

Due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays they will have only one stated meeting in November and December. Their next stated meeting will be at 6 p.m. on December 10. This will also be their annual Christmas party and their Lions Club International District Deputy will be the guest speaker.

The club also voted to have their Christmas party dinner catered by Mr. Greg Clisso. The meeting/Christmas party dinner will be held at the new Appalachia Lions Club Fellowship Hall located at 127 Callahan Ave., Appalachia.

Happy Birthday

Our friend Betty Fleenor celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, November 18. I enjoyed volunteering at Lonesome Pine Hospital with Betty. Happy belated birthday!

Mr. Gary Bush also celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, November 18. We had a spaghetti dinner and our son Shawn and his family came down from Wise to enjoy a meal at home.

We are only going out for the necessary trips. Honestly, I have a hard time breathing through the masks so we stay home most of the time.

New Covid Guidelines

The new guidelines for the masks and crowds are a safe way to go for “us” older people. Retirement is the only way to survive this Covid threat. We are all in this together. Wear the mask and stay in as much as possible. That has been in place since last March and it will apply for months to come. It is scary when we see on TV the new cases are soaring up again. Not much to look forward to. One thing for sure, God is still in control. No matter how bleak the news may be, He will see us through.

Christmas Greetings

This is the time of year we can actually send Christmas Greetings to our senior friends at The Laurels Retirement and Assisted Living, 5635 BSG Drive, Norton, VA 24273. They can have no visitors so a card would let them know we are thinking about them

Thanksgiving Card

Sally V. Gibson is a blessing to all who have the privilege of knowing her. She is not out as much as usual but she corresponds with friends through cards. Thank you for the Thanksgiving card we received. J. Fred Tate, an early school classmate at Appalachia Elementary to Sally Gibson, was remembering his and Sally’s school friendship when they were very young. He and his wife Opal received a Thanksgiving Card and were very pleased to hear from Sally. Thank you Sally for all your prayers, cards and hospitality.

Thanksgiving Visitors

Our daughter Sabrina and her husband Richard will be with us the week of Thanksgiving.

Decorating the Appalachia Cultural Art Center Windows

Gary and I are planning to decorate the windows at the Cultural Arts Center for the winter holidays. Last year so many people commented on how they enjoyed the windows for the holidays and we figure, even though the doors are closed, we could certainly decorate the windows for people to enjoy on Main Street in Appalachia.

It will have a Christmas theme.

The Arts Center has been closed since the Valentine’s Day concert with the UVA Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Donnie Sorah. This was due to the Covid restrictions.

We surely do miss not being able to have the programs and plays at the Center. It will open up again when all the Covid threats are eliminated for sure.

Beautiful Weather

The beautiful sunny weather we have been enjoying is wonderful!

Gary and I decided we would get our Christmas wreaths out of the basement and hang them on our windows. We will not put up our tree and decorate the inside of our home until after Thanksgiving. Give the turkey a few more days to be the centerpiece for the decoration.

No Gatherings Over 25 People

No parades, no parties, no gatherings over 25 people. Actually this closes any kind of a gathering down. Christmas will be different but the Covid virus is deadly to people.

It too will pass and hopefully we can look back and be glad we followed the rules and were spared in this terrible time.

I do believe this is the first year the Macy’s Parade in New York has been cancelled. It is the oldest event I know of.

Condolences

We send our condolences to the Estridge family in Inman. Their sister, Agnes passed away last week. In talking to Audrey, they plan to bring Agnes back to Virginia for her final resting place.

Please remember this family in your prayers.
