Congratulations to a well deserved man. Thank you Jim for your services.

Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is Nov. 11, which is next Wednesday. The one day of each year designated to appreciate the brave men and women across all wars who answered the call to serve.

Veteran’s Day began under President Woodrow Wilson as Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919. It wasn’t until after World War II that the U.S. Government changed the name to Veteran’s Day.

This observance day is intended to honor the veterans of “all wars”, both living and deceased. At 11 am the country observes a moment of silence each year. The American flag is flown at half-mast. Last year, 2019, marked the 100th year since Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day a holiday. Thank you to all veterans for your service to this great country.

Stork Delivers Early

The stork came a little early on Brown Street last week!

Joshua Lee Green made his grand entrance weighing 5 pounds, 4 ounces and a very beautiful baby boy.

Proud parents are Clarissa and Lee Green. I do not know Clarissa’s parents but Sammy Lee and Natalee Green are proud grandparents, Sam and Charlotte great grandparents. Congratulations!

Condolences

We were sad to learn of the passing of Haruko Akers. Haruko came to the United States when she married Pete Akers when he was stationed in Japan. She has lived in Appalachia since she came to the area in the 1950s.

Haruko accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior and attended faithfully the Appalachia First Apostolic Church. On Christmas Eve she loved to sing in her native language of Japanese, “Silent Night”. It was very beautifully done.
She loved animals and people and most of all her Savior, Jesus Christ. Always had a smile on her face.

Friday at 3 pm a graveside service will be conducted at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Wylenee Warden passed away last week. She had a battle with pancreatic cancer. She graduated from Appalachia High School in the late 1960s. She was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and a school teacher. She lived in Imboden in her family’s home place. Wylenee was laid to rest with her deceased family members at River View Cemetery in East Stone Gap.

We send our condolences to all the families of our classmates who walked the halls at Appalachia High School over 50 years ago. Wylenee Warden, Lynn Ratcliffe, Bobby Hall and Haruko Akers who cooked the food at the AHS cafeteria and the Cornett family.

Lynn Ratcliffe, a 1966 graduate of AHS passed away last week on October 27. He was 72 years old. Lynn was married to Connie Ratcliffe for many years. They had two sons and one grandchild.

Lynn was laid to rest at American Legion Cemetery on October 31.

Dickie and Patty Cornett lost their one and only daughter, Leanza Cornett last week. Leanza had a fall in her kitchen at her home in Florida. She never regained consciousness, even after surgery. A tragic loss for this family and friends. Please remember this family in your prayers.

We were sorry to learn of the passing of Bobby Hall, formerly from Osaka, when he lived with his family and attended Appalachia High School.

Bobby had battled colon cancer for 3 years. He and his wife Carolyn lived in Augusta, SC. He is survived by Carolyn and one daughter, Yuvet Dysart and her husband and four grandsons.

Bobby played and lettered in sports at AHS, he graduated in 1964.

He and Carolyn married in 1965 and were married 55 years. Bobby will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Lois Austin, his sister told me Bobby was ready to be with the Lord. That’s worth it all.

No Christmas Parade

I was a little sad to learn there will be no Christmas parade in the town of Appalachia this year due to the Covid virus.

The Town of Appalachia, Fire Dept. Specialty projects and the Lions Club are working on something to be determined for the children. When I find out what, I will let you know.

Main-Street Cruise-In

Cruise-In, Main Street in Appalachia, Saturday, Nov. 7th at 4 pm, starting at Save-A-Lot parking lot and turning around and cruising back through town at the Home Town Variety Store parking lot. Food truck, music and the fun of being outside and seeing friends and antique vehicles. Come and enjoy this event, it is fun!

Sandy’s chili will be sold as a fundraiser for the Lion’s Club floor replacement in their new building.

The price is $5 for two hot dogs and a drink. Well worth the price to get a great hot dog!

An area will be set up under the bridge across from their new location on Callahan Ave. Popcorn will also be available. Great meal!

Beautiful Moon

The second full moon the month of October was very beautiful.

The wind and rain have blown away most of the leaves on the trees. Now when we drive on the highways and leaves are on the roads and I really know November is here.

I love all the seasons. They are all four different and have their own different beauty. I still love Fall of the year colors.
