Main Street Cruise-In

Saturday, November 7 in Appalachia there will be an opportunity to be a part of showing off your vintage autos. Cars and trucks in great shape and have been restored to be a joy for their owner to drive through the town.

This was done last month and the crowd was great. Drivers of cars, trucks and motorcycles were parading in a proud cruise through town. This is the “Main Street Cruise-In”, 4pm Eastern Standard Time starting at Save-a-Lot Parking lot and turn around at Home Town Variety.

Food trucks, music and friendly folks to enjoy stepping back into our past years of great looking autos.

See you at the Main Street Cruise-In. Sandy’s chili will be the main course for the Lions’ Club fund raiser also, under the bridge on Callahan Avenue. Greatest chili ever!

Appalachia Lions Club Hotdog Fundraiser

The Appalachia Lions Club will be having a hot dog fundraiser on November 7 in conjunction with the Appalachia Main Street Cruise-In. The price is $5.00 for two hotdogs with Sandy’s chili and a beverage. They will have an area set up under the bridge across from their new location on Callahan Ave. They will begin at 4 p.m. and sell until they run out of hot dogs and chili. Popcorn is available too!

The proceeds from this fundraiser is designated to go towards the flooring replacement in their new building which is greatly needed.

There are many projects that will have to be addressed at the Appalachia Lions Club new location in the future, as funds become available.

On November 27, 2020 the Appalachia Lions Club has been serving their community and surrounding area for 79 years. Now, they are needing support from all those who are able. If anyone would like to help by donating whatever they can to the Appalachia Lions Club building fund in memory of or in honor of a loved one, they may contact any Appalachia Lions Club, Appalachia Masonic Lodge #229 or Powell Valley Shrine Club member or mail your donation to: Appalachia Lions Club Building Fund, PO Box 528, Appalachia, VA 24216

All donations and love offerings will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Good Medical Report

I forgot to give the good report concerning Bruce Large’s Covid hospitalization at Mountain Home V.A. hospital. Bruce had pneumonia and was tested very quickly and hospitalized and treatments began. He is 85 years old. As everyone who knows Bruce, he is a pharmacist and teaches a class at ETSU on pharmacy, a very intelligent man.

He was in the hospital close to a week and he called me on the phone to let me know he was back at his home in Johnson City and he said, “I feel great”. He had received the experimental medicine that was given to President Donald Trump.

This was what Bruce told me and he was happy to be back at his home and feeling great.

Former Teacher Passed Away

I learned a former retired teacher at AHS had passed away last week.

Juanita Thompson was an icon at AHS for many years. The students loved her and all her witt.

After her retirement she lived in Florida with her daughter, Jill.

Harvest Moon

We are supposed to have a second full moon this month so be sure and watch for the harvest moon this weekend.

Belated Birthday Wishes

Happy Belated Birthday wishes to Willis Harvey on Sunday, October 25th from his sister, Betty. Also, Betty’s brother, Gary Harvey on Ridge Avenue in Appalachia celebrated his birthday on October 26. Betty wants to wish her two brothers a happy belated birthday. Brothers don’t forget Betty’s birthday is today, Oct. 29.

Wedding Anniversary

Barbara and Charles Richardson celebrates their 53rd wedding anniversary on Friday, Oct. 30. Susie wants to wish them a happy anniversary.

AHS Alumni Birthdays

November 1 we have three Appalachia High School alumni celebrating their birthdays, Roger Whited, Carla Richardson and Vonda Wolfe. We wish all three a happy birthday!

Beautiful October Weather

With the beautiful October weather the last two weeks Gary and I have got a lot of outside work done on our house.

Power washed the house and garage, and this was a big job. Painting inside was finished and so was our flooring problem.

It has really been a very beautiful October. Glad to be able to be outside.

Grandsons Visit Postponed

Our grandsons from Georgia were not able to come up for a weekend visit last week. Tony is a youth pastor at their church and James does a lot of the musical instruments and so they had a conflict but they do plan on trying again in a few weeks. Our son, Shawn and his family, came down after church for Sunday dinner with us at our home. That’s always special to us.

Daylight Savings Time Ends

Daylight savings time ends this Saturday night, October 31. Sunday morning we will get that extra hour of rest and that means very long evenings.

Myself, I wish it would stay one way or another and stop changing! As we age we don’t like change!
