Lions Club Meeting

Today, Thursday, June 25 the Appalachia Lions Club will meet at 7 pm for their second meeting in June.

Susie’s menus is hamburger steak, brown gravy, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, 7 layer salad, rolls, peach cobbler, ice cream and beverages.

Railroad Days Cancelled

The annual Railroad Days event in Appalachia has, along with every event that was scheduled, had to be cancelled for this year. This is due to the spreading of the Covid virus in crowds of people. We have to abide by the rules. Our number of cases in Wise County is very small compared to the larger cities in our state of Virginia. The governor of the state issued the order for masks to be worn so we will have to wear masks when we are out in public places. Maybe this will all be behind us next year!

Lonesome Pine School

and Heritage Center Museum

The Lonesome Pine School and Heritage Center Museum in Big Stone Gap will be opened for the season on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday following the guidelines issued by the Virginia Health Department. The doors will be open from 1pm until 5 pm. On Wednesday volunteers Wayne Herndon, Barbara Horton, Randy Blair will be there. Come by and see all the school yearbooks they have obtained. If you would like to obtain one of the yearbooks they will sell it to you. Each day will have different volunteers working in the school. Never know who you will see. They want people to come by and pay a visit.

Birthday Wishes

Happy Birthday today, Thursday, June 25 to a lovely, kind lady who is celebrating her 84th birthday today in Appalachia.

Jenny Taylor is well known to her family and many friends in Appalachia. We all wish her a blessed birthday.

Teresa H. Moore in Lawrenceville, GA is having a birthday this Sunday, June 28. Teresa is an AHS graduate and has a great number of friends and family living in this area who wish her a happy birthday.

Monday, June 29 we have two senior citizens in Appalachia celebrating their birthdays. Bonnie Ireson and Roy Munsey share this date on the calendar. Happy Birthday to you both!

Mike Ford is Home

Mike Ford is home now and getting much stronger. We thank God for answered prayers for Mike and Una Faye.

Condolences

We all extend our condolences to Kim Frazier Murray family. Kim passed away unexpectedly last week. She graduated from AHS in 1985. She was preceded in death by her parents, Don and Doris Frazier and two sisters, Donna and Tammy.

Unexpected Visitor

Last Wednesday night I heard a noise on our side porch and when I opened the door a big raccoon was looking back at me. We have two outside cats we feed outside but I won’t feed Mr. Raccoon. Believe me, I made sure the cat food was “NOT” left on the porch day or night. This is the price we pay when property is left vacant beside you for many years.

Pleasant Phone Conversation

I had a very nice phone conversation last week with Betty Collins at her home in Appalachia. She was remembering all the people in Inman she knew years ago as a young girl. It is a blessing as we are in our senior years of life and to be able to remember our young life and the people in it. Betty has arthritis in her back and it is hard for her to move around or travel. Since the Covid virus she is staying in and not seeing her doctor. She needs prayer and she asks everyone when you pray to please remember her. Soon she hopes to see a doctor.

Father’s Day Visit

Our son Shawn and his wife Emily and their three children came down to visit us last Sunday evening for Father’s Day. We had a nice evening meal and good fellowship.

Father’s Day has always been a much celebrated day for our family with our two children excitedly giving their dad a card and a hug and kiss.

It’s a sad day for us older children who no longer have a dad living and being able to tell him how much we love and appreciate him. I am thankful I had a loving, hardworking father whose life was only 55 years on this earth but I still remember all his love and generosity.

Can’t Visit The Laurels

Gary and I have not been able to visit our friend Nancy Buchanan at The Laurels. We talk to her on the phone. She is doing very well and she is very healthy for an almost 85 year old.

The Laurels is not permitting anyone in and the staff has to wear a mask. All this is due to the Corona virus threat. The residents are protected and this is great.

Last year we attended all the monthly functions that were scheduled for the residents and their families.

Nancy is the last one living in her family so we just adopted her into ours.

No Activity in Cultural Arts Building

No activity at all in the Appalachia Cultural Arts building.

In February we were looking forward to hosting new events featuring the Acme Drug Soda, ice cream parlor setting with lots of new ideas for entertainment in the center.

We all know the answer to that stoppage of everything. We are waiting for a date when all this danger with the Corona virus is past us.

Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth and standing 6 feet apart is the rule we have to abide by till a vaccine is ready to help us all.

Lunch on the Lawn

Lunch on the Lawn at the Southwest Virginia Museum is scheduled to begin July 3 in Big Stone Gap. This is a fun filled event.

Crushed Egg Shells

Egg shells are used to fertilize plants and keep rodents and cats away from the plants. Save the shells and crush by hand in a baggie or put them in a blender after you have accumulated a bag full.

I have crushed them and now we will apply them to the dirt around our tomato plants and cucumber vines. We will see, cannot hurt. We do use a lot of eggs.
